Garden Beginnings

After growing up with a small backyard garden that my mom entertained for a few years, with childhood memories “helping” my grandma harvest her country garden, as well as Nic growing some fruits and veggies as a kid; we were both really eager to start a garden of our own! After about a year owning our own home and finally feeling more settled in, we knew it was time to plan out our future garden. We didn’t really know exactly what kind of garden we wanted… For example, we wondered: where would it go, how big, what would we plant, etc.? However, with spring on its way, we had to get to it or we would miss the spring planting season.

Towards the beginning of 2014, we finally had an idea of what we wanted. Because one our dogs loves to eat plants, we knew we had to go with a garden design that was enclosed to prevent him from eating everything! Nic, being the handyman that I love, designed out our garden on graph paper. With only a few adjustments needed, before I knew it, Nic was shovel in hand, digging our first steps into this new and exciting life!

After a successful first season of growing all kinds of fruits, veggies, and herbs in our garden, we knew right away we needed more garden space. Around the end of 2014, we added significantly more garden space on our suburban lot! We put in a retaining wall across the back of our fence line to create a raised garden area.  We planted a Pomegranate tree and an Asian Pear tree, and we successfully planted and harvested both fruits, veggies, and herbs this past 2015 spring/summer growing season. We also took out the grass on one side of our front yard. So far we have planted an Apple tree, flowers, herbs, and eventually vegetables and fruit will also call our front yard home.
