We got goats!

IMG_6093 Well we actually got them over a month ago, so this is a pretty late posting…  We’ve been so busy lately that I haven’t gotten around to updating the blog much until now. We’ve always wanted goats so we are very excited to finally have them! We weren’t planning on getting goats right away, but since we decided to get a livestock guardian dog puppy, we figured we should just jump in and get some, that way the LGD puppy would have another farm animal to bond with and for us to work on training her with as well (chick here to read about our LGD puppy). I like a lot of the different goat breeds for various reasons, but Nic has always liked the Nubian goats, mostly for their big cute floppy ears. They are also one of the more popular breeds in our area, so we knew we would be able to get some reasonably easy. We don’t plan on showing goats or anything like that, and since we are just beginners, we decided to get two unregistered Nubian does from someone local for an affordable price. We were told they were about 5 ½ to 6 months old when we got them.

They have been pretty skittish of us, but seem to warm up to us more and more every day. The past two weeks they have made major improvements on trusting us and feeling more comfortable around us. They now run and play and jump on everything. They really love eating the olive trees that we have in their enclosed yard. We are really enjoying them and they seem pretty happy!

The plan is to breed them this fall for spring babies! Ideally we will let the does raise their kids, and then we will milk them for the duration of their lactation. We will try to sell all the kids, and possibly keep a buckling for the freezer. I would like to try breeding one of them to a Boer goat so that the kids would have better meat carcasses. We are very excited for this new adventure in goats, and are learning a lot! Keep following along to see more of our fun adventures in this new farm life :)
